Martin Whittaker is an investment and business professional with over 20 years’ experience in the sustainable finance field. Martin is currently Chief Executive Officer of JUST Capital, a New York City-based non-profit organization focused on advancing a more inclusive capital market. He is also co-convener of the CREO family office investment network; an investment committee member for Sonen Capital’s private investment platform; and a Board member of the Carbon Disclosure Project U.S.
Prior to JUST Capital, Martin was a Managing Director and founding partner at Sonen Capital, a leading impact investment management firm serving the family office, foundation and private wealth markets. Martin led Sonen’s private equity, real asset and direct investing activities, and was a member of the firm’s executive and investment committees. Previously, Martin worked as Director of MissionPoint Capital Partners, a Connecticut-based clean energy private equity firm; a Senior Vice President at Swiss Re Financial Services in New York City, where he was part of the Environmental and Commodity Markets team; and a Managing Director and initial employee of Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, Inc., a pioneering investment advisory and research firm within the environmental finance space.
Martin has also served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, acted as an independent advisor on sustainable finance to several multinational corporations and the U.S. Government’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and been an investment committee member for the Climate Change Capital private equity fund in the UK. He has also provided expert testimony on environmental markets to the U.S. Senate. Martin holds a PhD in environmental science from the University of Edinburgh, an MBA from the University of London, and M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Chemistry from, respectively, McGill University, Montreal and the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.
